Members of the Odisha Assembly including Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra today exercised their franchise to elect a new President of the country.
The voting which began at 1000 hrs continued till 1700 hrs.
The counting of the votes would be done on July 20 at New Delhi and the results will be declared on the same day. The new President will succeed Mr Pranab Mukherjee whose tenure will be over on July 25 next.
Assembly sources here said, 146 out of 147 members exercised their franchise today. Congress MLA Subal Sahu did not turn up to cast his ballot due to illness.
Rajya Sabha MP A V Swami cast his vote in the state Assembly here today.
NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind and opposition candidate Meira Kumar are vying with each other for the top post in the country.
Mr Mishra was the first to cast his ballot today.
Ruling BJD has already announced to support Mr Kovind. In the 147 member State Assembly, the BJD has 117 members, Congress 16, BJP 10, CPM 1, SKD 1 and two Independents.
The BJD has 20 Lok Sabha members while the BJP has one member. In Rajya Sabha, the BJD has 9 members and the Congress has one member.
