At least 30 people were killed when a bus carrying over 40 artistes of an opera team fell down a 300-feet gorge in Gailo Ghati in Deogarah district of Odisha Sunday evening, police said.
The ill-fated bus of the Bharati Gananatya opera party fell into the gorge off the Tilaebani Gaelo ghati while going from Deogarah to Sohela in Baragarh district, Deogarh Superintendent of Police Sarah Sharma told media persons.
Twenty seven mutilated bodies including one woman and a kid were recovered from the accident site . The ODRAF team used gas cutter to search the victims inside the over-turned bus. The toll could go up, rescuers said.
Of the 11 injured persons including women and children rescued from the spot, three died on the way to Deogarah sadar Hospital. The three seriously injured persons would be shifted to Burla Medical College and Hospital .
The rescue operations were continuing with the help of 8 Fire Service team , one ODRAF team and CRPF personnel . Search operation would continue over night, Director General Fire Service, Binaya Behera said.
He said the rescue operation was on with the help of fire , ambulance services and contingents of APR forces, but it was getting hampered due to poor visibility and uneven terrain.
The bodies would be shifted to Debagarah Sadar hospital for postmortem after identification, police said
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the sad incident and directed the district civil and police administration to expedite the rescue operation.
