The month-long Magh Mela festival began Thursday at Sangam in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. During the entire month of Magh, kalpwasis or pilgrims stay on the bank Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati in tents and take early morning bath and take part in other religious duties.
Despite chilling cold, large number of people are continuously reaching Sangam to take holy dip on the occasion of Paush Purnima. According to Magh Mela administration, more than 12 lakh people took holy dip at Sangam and other ghats of Ganga till noon. Bathing is taking place in all seventeen Ghats.
One month long stay in Sangam area by kalpwasis has also begun with today’s bathing. Mela administration says, around one lakh kalpwasis are now present in the mela area and separate arrangements have been made for them. Elaborate administrative and security arrangements have been made in the Mela area.
Mela police is also regulating the crowd, and vehicle entry in Mela area is banned today. Adequate police force and water police have been deployed in the bathing areas.
