With Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan’s three years term coming to an end on September 4, speculations are rife that NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya can become the next RBI Governor.
TV channels, including CNBC Awaaz and ABP News, reported that a formal announcement of the decision was expected in the next 48 hours.
Besides Panagariya, top contenders for the post included former deputy governors of the RBI Subir Gokarn and Rakesh Mohan.
Others, who were said to be in the race, included SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya and Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das.
Finance Ministry’s Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian and RBI’s current Deputy Governor Urjit Patel were also considered for the top slot.
