14 March, New Delhi
Just four days before the first anniversary of the Yogi Adityanath government, BJP lost both Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha by-elections on Wednesday.
The principal opposition Samajwadi Party candidates wrested both the seats from BJP, giving a major jolt to the ruling dispensation, just before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, where BJP was aiming to create a history by winning all 80 seats.
The victory of the SP candidates also gave enough indications that SP-BSP combination in UP polls can defeat the BJP in any elections. In these two bypolls, BSP had given its support to the SP candidate, though they did not campaign for them.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in his first reaction, has accepted the defeat. “We accept the verdict of people, this result is unexpected, we will review the shortcomings. I congratulate the winning candidates,” he said in a statement here. The Chief Minister blamed the over confidence of BJP leaders as one of the reasons for the defeat.
“Yeh BSP-SP ka jo rajnitik saudebaazi, desh ke vikas ko baadhit karne ke liye bani hai, iske baare mein hum apni rann neeti tayaar karenge (This political bargaining between BSP and SP has been made to derail the development of the country. We will now prepare a strategy to counter them),” he added.
Samajwadi Party President and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav termed the win of the party candidates in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha bypolls as a mandate of people against the BJP government at the Centre, as well as in the state.
“People have given their mandate and opinion against the BJP governments at the Centre as well as in UP, as they have ditched them and did not fulfill any of their promises,” he said, while interacting with the media here.
The SP chief was very critical of BJP leaders, particularly the Chief Minister, for his derogatory remarks on the BSP-SP combination in these bypolls.
“The leader said whatever he liked and termed us as Aurangzeb, besides commenting that we are ‘saap aur chachundar’ and ‘chor chor mausere bhai’. But, people gave them a befitting reply,” he said He thanked all the political parties, who had supported the SP candidates, particularly the BSP, Left Parties and RLD, besides the voters of Gorakhpur and Phulpur.
“It is the win of the social justice and now it seems that the dream of the people to get a government of social justice, would be fulfilled,” he claimed.
Alleging that BJP had always tried to incite communal and caste clash for their own vested interest, he said now it seems that the saffron party would return to development agenda, ”as we did in the 2017 polls, but people rejected us”.
“The fake ideology of nationalism and an effort to create division in the society will not be tolerated by the people now. These bypolls have taught the BJP a lesson,” he added.
