The ATP Tennis tournament, Chennai Open began Monday with the main draw at the Nungambakkam Stadium this afternoon. Daniil Medvedev of Russia defeated Brazilian player Thiago Monteiro in straight sets of 6-3, 6-3 in the first match. In another match, Dudi Sela of Israel moved on to the next round by winning against Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia 6-2, 6-2.
Earlier, Indian player Yukhi Bhambri surged into the main draw by defeating Nicolas Kicker of Argentina in the qualifier, and is set to take on compatriot Ramkumar Ramanathan in his opening round.
World Number 6 Marin Cilic, who won the trophy twice in 2009 and 2010, is considered the favourite this year. The Croatian player enters the court after claiming his maiden Masters title by winning at Cincinnati, subduing Wimbledon champion Andy Murray.
The world number 14 Roberto Bautista Agut is another serious contender who aims for a strong start to the new season after winning two ATP titles last year. Chennai Open is a favourite with top seeds as it precedes the Australian Open grand slam event where the climatic conditions are considered to be almost similar.
Chennai Open having a prize money of US Dollar 4,50,000 this year is being participated by many Indian players than ever. In the doubles, Rohan Bopanna pairs with Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, Saketh Myneni with Ramkumar Ramanathan and Sriram Balaji with Vishnu Vardhan.
