Cong, BJD Create Ruckus In RS; House Adjourned Thrice

09 December, New Delhi

For the second consecutive day today, the Rajya Sabha witnessed an uproar by the Congress alleging ”political vendetta” by the Modi Government, forcing repeated adjournments of the House, the last one till 1215 hrs.

Members of the BJD also created noisy scenes over the Polavaram project in Odisha.

As soon as the House reassembled at 1200 hrs, Congress and BJD Members entered the Well raising slogans on different issues.

Congress Members, shouting “Modi teri tanashahi nahi chalegi (Modi your dictatorship will not work here)” slogans, disrupted the House, while the Members of the BJD were shouting slogans against the Polavaram project.

The BJD Members entered the Well with placards reading “Polavaram will harm Odisha” and “Polavaram Go Back”.

The uproar forced Chairman Hamid Ansari to adjourn the House till 1215 hrs.

Earlier, the House was adjourned twice during the Zero hour over uproar by the Congress and the BJD.

Deputy Chairperson P J Kurien’s pleas to Members to allow proceedings fell on deaf ears and the uproar continued.

Amid the uproar, Minister of state for Parliamentary affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi assured that the Government was ready for a debate on all issues and urged the agitating Members to allow the House to function.

“Today is an important day as Whistle Blowers Protection Bill and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill is to come up,” Naqvi said.

He said the Congress which had asked for a debate on price rise and intolerance was not willing to take up the matters.

After repeated pleas by the Chair failed to pacify the agitating Members, the Deputy Chairman adjourned the House twice- first till 1130 hrs and later till 1200 hrs.

Yesterday also, the Congress had created a ruckus in the House on the issue, leading to repeated adjournments, which was eventually adjourned for the day.
