Dipa Karmakar becomes first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics

Dipa Karmakar Monday created history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics.

Karmakar, the 22-year-old gymnast from Tripura, exhibited a strong show as she completed her performance at the final qualifier and Olympic Test Event in Rio de Janiero.

She finished ninth in the first of the four subdivisions of the women’s artistic category, thus qualifying for the Rio Olympics in August. Karmakar qualified for the Olympics after finishing all four apparatus in test event.It is one of the most astonishing moments for Indian sports.

Karmakar was earlier unable to clinch an Olympic berth in the World Championships in November last as she finished fifth place. She had created history by becoming the first woman gymnast to win a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

This win had made her the first Indian woman to win a commonwealth gymnastics medal and the second Indian, after Ashish Kumar.
