Opposition Congress and BJP members in Odisha Assembly Monday staged a walk out expressing displeasure over the statement of Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout on the farmers problem in the state.
Leader of opposition Narasingh Mishra participating in the debate for the admissibility of an adjournment motion in the house said the farmers are committing suicide due to crop loss and loan overburden but the Odisha government is not admitting the farmers suicide cases.
Mishra held both the Union and the state government responsible for the farmers’ woes and demanded both the governments to admit farmers suicide and ensure remunerative price, pension and prestige for the farmers.
Mishra said the farmers are facing problems like crop loss, irrigation, marketing and storaging and the government has not yet been able to solve the problems.
Odisha Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Damodar Rout ,however, accused both the BJP government at the Centre for constantly neglecting the state when the BJD government, led by Naveen Patnaik is trying to do something for the state.
The Minister said the state government has not neglected the farmers and is working for their interest. Whenever the farmers have any problem the government has always assisted them and announced packages for the affected, he remarked.
Rout said due to the steps taken by the state government the production has increased from 55 lakh ton in 2000 to more than 1.17 lakh ton in 2016-17.
He predicted that the production would be increased to 1.20 lakh ton in 2017-18 despite crop damaged in drought, unseasonal rain and pestattack. The income of the farmers have also doubled during 2003 to 2013.
Describing the various steps taken by the state government for the benefit of the farmers, the Minister denied the allegation that farmers are committing suicide in Odisha due to crop loss or loan overburden.
He said in the name of politics some people are instigating the farmers tocommit suicide so that their family would get money and levelled the allegation of the opposition as totally politically motivated and meant to blame the state government.BM
