The Lok Sabha has approved the Demands for Grants for Railways for 2015-16.
Replying to a discussion on it in the House, Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu said, huge investment is required in Railways to improve its financial health.
He said, government wants to put back the Railways on track so that it can serve the nation and the interest of the poor.
Prabhu said, the Rail budget 2015-16 is dedicated to the common man and the announcements made in the Budget are under various stages of implementation. He said, Railways Ministry wants to work in collaboration with State governments to complete railway projects.
Prabhu said, the government is trying to increase the freight and passenger handling capacities significantly to earn more revenues. Justifying government’s decision of not announcing any fresh projects in the Budget, he said, the government is focusing to complete all the projects which are pending for years.
The house also passed the relevant appropriation bills , approving the railway budget 2015-16.
Earlier, initiating the discussion Rajeev Shankarrao Satav of the Congress accused the NDA government of failing to implement its election promises. He alleged that the Modi government has not made adequate passenger amenities including safety measures although ten months have passed.
Countering the opposition allegations, Suresh Channabasappa Angadi of the BJP held previous government responsible for the poor performance of the railways saying they were not having any vision on development. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision on Indian Railways is clearly visible in the Railway Budget.
