07 February, Bhubaneswar

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday ordered the much hyped alleged Kunduli gang rape case to be investigated by a court monitored Special Investigation Team(SIT).

Mr Patnaik described the Kunduli alleged gang rape case as an extremely tragic incident and said ” it is my firm belief that law should take its own course and justice should be done without fear or favour.

Earlier the state government had first ordered a Crime Branch inquiry and later instituted an independent judicial inquiry headed by sitting district judge of Koraput .

The Chief Minister said ”because of the extra ordinary circumstances of the case after the death of the victim girl, my strong faith and conviction in the principles of natural justice and commitment to safety and dignity of women, the state government will take immediate steps for handing over the cases to a Special Investigation Team (SIT) with a prayer to be monitored by Court.”The Opposition Congress and the BJP alleged that the girl was forced to commit suicide as she was denied justice and was under pressure from the police and civil administration who denied gang rape theory.

The Opposition have been demanding that the kunduli gang rape case be probed either by CBI or a court monitored SIT.

The Chief Minister said the state government is committed that justice should be delivered at the earliest and in the most transparent manner..

The opposition Congress and the BJP made a state wide hue and cry over the issue alleging that the state government was denying justice to the girl to protect the culprits involved in the case.BM
