Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday asserted that now that the law has taken its course with regard to Karti Chidambaram, it is the turn of his father “also to be arrested”. “Now that Karti Chidambaram has been arrested, it is the turn of his father now (P Chidambaram) also to be arrested,” Dr Swamy told Republic TV.
The sections of law applied against Karti include those which essentially rise from former Union Finance Minister Chidambaram “committing crime” under the Prevention of Corruption Act, he said.
“Law says a minister enabling benefits for his relatives and friends is an offence,” Dr Swamy pointed out. Dr Swamy also said that at times perhaps as the then Union Finance Minister Chidambarambypassed the cabinet committee on economic affairs as decision on FIPB ought to be takenwith the consent of the committee only.
However, he said CCEA members cannot “pretend” of not knowing about the clearance given either and added that – “there are other Congress leaders involved in other corruption cases”.
To a question, Dr Swamy said the next hearing in the famous National Herald case will come up on March 17 in which both Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi are “out on bail”.
As per the complaint filed in the court of the Metropolitan Magistrate on November 1, 2012, Dr Swamy has alleged that an interest free loan of Rs 90.25 crore (US$14 million) was granted to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), owner of the National Herald newspaper. It was alleged that the loan was not repaid which is in violation of Section 269T of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
In December 2015, top Congress leaders were granted bail.
