An atmosphere of confrontation appears to be building up in Gujarat between the upper castes led by the Patels and the lower castes led by the OBCs if the series of rallies being held and planned by the rival combinations is an indication.
While the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), pressing for their demand to include the affluent Patels in the OBC category to get the benefit of reservation in jobs and education, has planned five mass rallies in the next ten days, the combination of OBCs, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, have formed a joint action committee to safeguard the reservation given to them under the Constitution of India.
The joint action committee convener Alpesh Thakor, who addressed a well-attended rally of OBCs, Dalits and Adivasis in the predominantly tribal district of Panchmahals yesterday, would be addressing rallies 11 rallies all across the state between September 17 and September 28.
Since PAAS plans to take out Ekta Yatra from Dandi in South Gujarat to Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, covering a distance of 350 km, beginning September 19, the rallies of two rival coalitions are bound to crisscross.
We strongly condemn the way in which Patels are arm twisting the government to get reservation by threatening to uproot the government in 2017. I want to warn this government that dont take our patience for granted, Thakor said while addressing a joint rally of OBCs, SC and ST.
