Odisha Assembly, in the absence of the opposition Congress and BJP, Wednesday passed a resolution to celebrate the birth centenary of former Odisha Chief Minister and architect of the modern Odisha Biju Patnaik, falling on March 5 next year, through out the year in the state and the country.
The House in its resolution also requested the Odisha government to urge the Centre to confer Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of the country posthously on the legendary leader for his role in the independence struggle of the country his efforts towards nation building.
The resolution was moved by government chief whip after a two-day long discussion over the issue that concluded Wednesday.
Members of the Opposition Congress and BJP did not participate in the discussion. Members of both the opposition parties walked out of the House day before yesterday in protest against the Speakers ruling to suspend the Congress legislator Naba Kishore Das for seven days for allegedly watching porn clips on his mobile phone inside the house without giving him a chance to express his views.
Senior Treasury bench leader and former Minister Damodar Rout took Strong exception to the way the house is being conducted.
He said, Biju Babu was not the property of the BJD but belong to the whole state and the country. It was not right not to involve the Opposition while the house was discussing Biju Babu.
Dr Rout said the importance of the resolution would have been increased had the opposition participated in the discussion.
He said while the house was discussing Biju Babu, the sky would not have fallen had the ruling of the Speaker was delayed by a day or two.
However, several members of the BJD recollect the contribution of Biju Babu for the development of the state and his role in national politics.
