President Pranab Mukherjee has called upon the overseas Indian community to participate in the flagship programmes of Government of India.
Addressing the valedictory ceremony of 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention in Bengaluru this evening, Mukherjee said, the NRIs can contribute in flagship programmes like Make in India, Start Up India, Clean India. He said, the community has contributed in various fields around the globe with dedication. The President said, the Pravasis should share knowledge and cultural heritage of India and in the country they reside.
Praising the Prime Minister of Portugal Dr. Antonio Costa, Mukherjee said, he is an inspiration of the overseas Indian community. The President expressed concern over the plight of temporary migrants in the Gulf region and in South East Asia. Mr Mukherjee pitched for upgrading of skills and talents.
The President said, concerns of Indian women marrying into NRI families can be most effectively addressed by local community organizations abroad.
On the occasion, Mukherjee conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards on 30 eminent NRIs for their contribution to different fields like Public Service, Community Service, Business, Culture and education. They include Portuguese Prime Minister Dr Antonio Costa, US Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Desai Biswal, Member of European Parliament Neena Gill, former Finance Minister of Trindad and Tobago Winston Chandrabhan Dookeran, Antwerp Indian Association, Indian social and cultural centre, Dubai.
The President also released book of selected speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi which outlines a new vision of India’s foreign policy. The theme of this year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was Redefining engagement with Indian diaspora.
About 8,000 delegates from 30 countries participated in the three-day event.
