PM congratulates Javelin thrower Neeraj for becoming first Indian world champion

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra for his outstanding sporting accomplishment, as he became the first Indian athlete to become a world champion at any level after winning a gold medal at the U-20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

“Congratulations Neeraj Chopra for the outstanding sporting accomplishment. We are proud of you,” tweeted Prime Minister Modi.

Neeraj Chopra, with an effort of 86.48m, has set a new world to win the gold medal at the IAAF World U-20 Athletics Meet.

He broke the old mark of 84.69 metres held by Latvian Zigismunds Sirmais by nearly two metres.

The 18-year-old Javelin thrower bettered his previous personal best of 82.23 set at the South Asian Games earlier this year, which incidentally was the old national record.

Goel Announces Cash Award

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel Sunday announced the cash award of Rs 10 lakh to Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra for creating World Record at the IAAF world U 20 athletics Championship in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

”I am delighted to announce that Min of Sports would award Rs 10 Lakh to Neeraj Chopra for winning gold Medal at U-20 World Championship.”Congratulations Neeraj Chopra to become first Indian world champion in athletics. Kudos!! You have made India proud,” Goel tweeted.

Chopra, who clinched gold medal in the event by throwing the javelin at a distance of 86.48 mt, broke the old mark of 84.69 metres, held by Latvian Zigismunds Sirmais.South African Johan Gobler (80.59m) took the silver and Anderson Peters (79.65m) of Granada finished third.
