Terming the address by President Pranab Mukherjee to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament ‘disappointing’, the Congress Tuesday refuted the claims made by the Government on its achievements on various fronts.
Addressing reporters here, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said contrary to the promise by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, before the Lok Sabha elections, of bring about ‘sabka saath sabka vikaas’, the two and a half years of the NDA Government had witnessed ‘RSS ka saath’ and ‘BJP ka vikas’.
“In the President’s address, the government has focused on ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’. It is a slogan given by Mr Modi before the Lok Sabha elections. However, after winning the elections, what he has done is just the opposite — ‘RSS Ka Saath’ and ‘BJP Ka Vikas’. Today, all sections of the society, from farmers, to the labourers to the small traders to the youth, are unhappy. The suicides by farmers have increased in the last two and a half years of the NDA Government. Youths were promised that 10 crore jobs would be created in five years. But just under two lakh jobs have been created. The budget allocation of Dalits has been cut down. So, ultimately, it is only the RSS and the BJP who have benefitted,” Azad said.
Earlier, reacting to the President’s address, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ahmed Patel said, “The President’s address is disappointing and doesn’t address any real challenges. It is merely a collection of government’s failed promises.”. Patel said the President’s address failed to come out with any data about demonetisation, creation of new jobs or rail safety. “Did the President’s Address mention anything about data on demonetisation, failure to create new jobs, rail safety?” Patel said.
Azad said while the President’s address talked about investment in the railways, it failed to mention anything about the increasing number of railway accidents since the NDA Government came to power.
“The President’s address talks about the outlay in the railways. But there is no mention in it of the number of deaths in railway accidents that has been at an all time high during the two and a half years of the NDA Government. Also, the ceasefire violations have increased and are at an all time high. We support the surgical strike carried out by the Army. But why is it that ceasefire violations have increased despite the strikes,” Azad said.
