Shivpal-Akhilesh jostle for mike; clash among SP supporters

24 October, Lucknow

The meeting of Samajwadi Party legislators to break ice in high-profile family drama ended with further widening the rift as state party president Shivpal Yadav jostled with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to take the mike at the state party office here Monday.

The incident occurred in the presence of SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav where the protocol and the security of the Chief Minister were breached.

The incident occurred after the Chief Minister hugged his uncle Mr Shivpal Yadav and touched his feet to take blessings on his birthday yesterday.

Trouble erupted soon after Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav in concluding remarks said, “The Muslim leaders from Ghaziabad have written to me that the Akhilesh government is ignoring the interests of the community.” Soon Mr Shivpal Yadav asked his loyalist MLC Ashu Malik to come on stage, a native of Ghaziabad.

The moment Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav left the mike, the Chief Minister rushed to it and said, “Amar Singh had planted false stories against me describing me as Aurangzeb and netaji as Shahjahan and Ashu Malik was also involved in this conspiracy and the story was published on front page of an English newspaper.”

The news report also carried a long quote of Mr Malik. The MLC had, however, claimed that he neither spoke to reporter of that newspaper nor he got any call from its office. Next day, the newspaper had carried a detailed contradiction of its report where Mr Akhilesh Yadav was labelled as ‘Aurangzeb’.

Immediately, Mr Shivpal Yadav rushed and jostled with the Chief Minister to take the mike and shouted that “Main bhi bolunga, jhut bole rahe hai, mukhyamantri jhut bol rahe hai (I will also speak, he is lying, chief minister is lying). Security staff of the Chief Minister had to intervene to protect him.

The loyalist of the Chief Minister criticised the intemperate behaviour of Mr Shivpal Yadav. “Those who keep on sermonising us on discipline they themselves and their cronies are violating the discipline,” said Atul Pradhan, who was recently denied ticket from Sardhana assembly seat in Meerut.

“It was a complete chaos. Mulayamji was sitting in between as a mute spectator. It is unfortunate what happened today. Yes, this can be said that Mulayamji has failed in bringing a truce. It is unfortunatebut true,” said a senior SP MLA.

Meanwhile, Mr Malik alleged that he was manhandled by the supporters of the Chief Minister. He was beaten up by MLA Pawan Pandey at the Chief Minister’s residence on Kalidas Marg. “The situation was tense inside the hall after the SP supremo ended his speech but there was no clash or jostling for the mike between the Chief Minister and Mr Shivpal Yadav, whatever happened today was due to some communication gap and misunderstanding.”
