Tamil Nadu state Crime Branch has arrested former Agriculture minister Agri Krishnamurthy in connection with the alleged suicide of a senior engineer S Muthukumarasamy in Chennai.
The arrest of Krishnamurthy comes 44 days after the death of Muthukumarasamy, who allegedly committed suicide because he was under pressure from the minister’s office while recruiting seven drivers.
Krishnamurty was summoned for questioning by Crime Branch and CID officials and was arrested late last night.
Official sources said as a part of further investigation, he is being taken from Chennai to Tirunelveli, where the officer committed suicide. Also, another official of the department Senthil has been arrested along with the former minister.
On 20th February, Muthukurmarasamy jumped in front of a train after frantically attending a phone call. The police on investigation found that the calls were allegedly made from the Minister’s office.
Soon after his death, allegation were made by opposition parties including PMK, Congress, DMK that the official killed himself due to pressure of then minister and sought his arrest and CBI probe.
The death of the official snowballed into a political row prompting the government to drop Krishnamurthy from the state cabinet and strip him off his party posts.
