The Tamil Nadu Government Tuesday cancelled the permission granted to Coca-Cola to set up a beverages plant at Perundruai in Erode district.
The Managing Director of the state owned industries promotion corporation issued an order cancelling permission to the company, after it failed to start construction in the stipulated six months time.
The company had proposed to set up state-of-the-art greenfield manufacturing facility with an investment of around Rs 500 crore, to manufacture a variety of beverages including juices and packaged drinking water for which over 71 acre of land has been allotted by the government.
However local farmers and various civic groups had objected to the plant, on the plea that extraction of water would lead depletion of ground water.
