12 May, Mumbai

Amidst tight security the Bhumata Brigade President Trupti Desai Thursday visited Mumbai’s Haji Ali Dargah but did not venture into the inner chamber of the shrine where women are not allowed.

Speaking to reporters in Mumbai after visiting the Dargah this morning, Desai said that she prayed at the Dargah that women be allowed to enter the inner sanctum, as was the case till 2011.

Desai also said that her fight for gender equality would continue and next time she and her fellow activists would try to visit the inner sanctum of the Dargah. She also said that she spoke to the Dargah Trustee and served them a 15-days ultimatum to permit women right upto the sanctum sanctorum, failing which she vowed to launch an agitation.

After campaign for entry of women in Shani Shingnapur and Trimbakeshwar temples in Maharashtra, Desai had taken her movement for gender equality to the Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai on April 28. But she stopped short of entering the shrine at the last minute amid resistance by activists of outfits opposed to the move.
