Read more19 November, Sohela (Odisha) Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Thursday announced a special package of Rs 35,000 crore for the development of Western Odisha and a slew of programmes for the farmers hit by the recent drought. Addressing a Chasi Samabesh here in Bargarh district attended by farmers of mostly Western Odisha,Patnaik said the state government would spend Rs 35,000 crore in Western Odisha in the next five years and 80 per cent of the money would be spent on agriculture alone. He said, while Rs 8,000 crore would be utilised in irrigation, Rs 13,000 crore will be spent on special feeder line for agriculture and rural electrification. This apart Rs 1,500 crore will be utilised for development of irrigation facilities in Bargarh district. The Chief Minister announced two medium irrigation projects- Ang Medium Irrigation project and Jeera medium irrigation project for Bargarh district. He further said in the next 15 days medium irrigation project in Kalahandi will be taken up by his government. Stating that the ruling BJD will be always with the farmers, Patnaik also announced that his government would fulfill the election manifesto and provide agricultural loans to the farmers at one per cent interest to benefit the small and marginal farmers in the state. He also announced a drought assistance of Rs 100 per quintal of paddy to the farmers in the drought-hit areas in the state, the expenses of which will be borne by the state government from its own resources. The BJD supremo came down heavily on the Opposition political parties for trying to weaken the will power of the farmers and said they will never succeed in their attempt. He also lashed out at the central government for not sanctioning any fund for the drought hit Odisha and ignoring the demand of the state to accord special category status despite the fact that Odisha has been suffering economically due to severe calamities like cyclone, flood and drought which hit the state in every two year
