Government mandates caller name display for telecom users from next month
New Delhi, October 15
The Government has mandated caller name display service for telecom users from the first of next month. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed all telecom service providers to introduce the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service across all service areas from first November.
Under the service, the name of the caller, as recorded in the subscriber database of the originating telecom service provider, will be displayed on the recipient’s phone along with the caller’s number. In the case of international calls from unsaved numbers, the display will show ‘International Call’. The service will be provided to all users without requiring a separate request.
DoT said that telecom service providers have already conducted trials of this service on wireless terrestrial networks operating on 4G and higher-generation technologies. It added that introduction of CNAP services in wireless terrestrial networks established using 2G and 3G technologies and in public switched telephone networks will be considered separately.
