Tata Steel ‘s 3 MTPA Green Field Steel Mill At Kalinga Nagar, Odisha commissioned

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Wednesday inaugurated India’s Steel major Tata Steel’s first steel plant at Kalinga Nagar in Jajpur district of Odisha.

The 3 MTPA Green Field Steel Mill which spread across 2200 acre land has been established at an investment of Rs 25,000 crore and The first phase of Tata’s 6 MTPA Stel Plant is being set up in two phases of 3 Million Tonnes each. However Tata Steel has plans to expand its capacity to 16 million tonne per annum with an investment of Rs.1 lakh crore by 2015.

Kalinga Nagar steel plant is the second biggest plant of the company and is the largest Greenfield steel project in the country.

With the commissioning of the first phase of the 6 MTPA Steel mill, the total steel production of Tata Steel across the country would scale up to 13 MTPA.

Inaugurating the Commissioning of the Tata Steel Plant, Chief Minister Patnaik said ,“as the various facilities of this steel plant are progressively commissioned , I am ssure , it will not only provide a fillip to the Industrialisation of the state but also contribute to the local economy and the development of Kalinga nagar and its nearby areas”,

Gracing the occasion, Tata Group CMD Cyrus Mistry said the plant will provide employment for 45,000 people after it gets fully operational.

Mistry , asserting that Tata Steel would continue to be partner of progress in Odisha, said the company would invest Rs.2000 crore to develop its Khandbandh iron ore mines in Keonjhar district.

In 2004, the Tata Steel had inked a MoU with the Odisha government to set up 6 million tonne steel plant at Kalinganagar at an estimated cost of Rs15,400 Crore. But the construction work was delayed for five years due to the agitation by the tribals who lost their land and the process 13 tribals were killed in police firing.
