Delhi police to watch over Kanhaiya’s movements; asks JNU to keep updating

Delhi police Saturday asked JNU administration to inform it about JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar’s movements, his nature of outings outside the campus in order to provide foolproof security to the leader who is facing trial in connection with sedition charges.

In a letter to the varsity authorities, DCP (South) Prem Nath said the SHO of Vasant Vihar, which has the campus under its jurisdiction, should be timely informed about his visits and whereabouts outside the campus, including the nature and mode of travel.The letter added that a police escort team will provide protection to him every time he move out of college campus.

The recent development came after the Supreme Court’s directive following the successive attacks on Kumar outside the Patiala House court on February 15 and 17, which said police must ensure that none of the students arrested in connection with the sedition case suffer even a scratch.Kumar was arrested on February 11 in case of the sedition charges slapped following an on-campus event where the anti-national slogans were raised.

The row kicked on February 9 when few students observe the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.Taking suo motu cognisance of video tapes that were aired on TV news channels, Delhi police registered an FIR against the entire JNU episode and arrested Kumar.On February 23, two more students — Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya — who were also accused in the same case, surrendered before the Delhi police. The two are currently under judicial custody.
