Shashank Manohar resigns as BCCI President to contest for ICC Chairman post

Shashank Manohar Wednesday stepped down as Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI, President barely seven months after being appointed.

In a letter addressed to BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur, . Manohar tendered his resignation with immediate effect from the post of President of BCCI and as the representative of BCCI on the International Cricket Council (ICC), and also from the the Asian Cricket Council. In his letter he thanked his colleagues and the staff for their support and cooperation.

As per BCCI rules, a Special General Meeting has to be convened within 15 days, apprising the members of the current situation.

BCCI today accepted and confirmed Shashank Manohar’s resignation from the post of President, acknowledging the contribution made by the senior cricket administrator in running the game during his tenure.

According to sources, Manohar would now contest for the post of Chairman of ICC. The ICC has set a rule that its Chairman should be of independent nature and can’t act in dual role keeping his position as his country’s cricketing chief. ICC’s election process for its new President will begin on Saturday.

Sources also suggest that Manohar left BCCI’s coveted post as he believed that recommendations made by Lodha panel are impossible to implement.

He had taken over as cricket body’s president after the demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya in October 2015. This was his second stint as the head of the cricketing body.
