England enforce follow-on after feeble Lanka fold for 91

England decided to enforce the follow-on at Headingley after bowling out an inexperienced Sri Lankan batting line-up for mere 91 on the second day of the opening Test on Friday.

In response to England’s first innings total of 298, Sri Lanka batsmen struggled against seamers James Anderson and Stuart Broad on a typically cold and overcast day.

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews (34) and Lahiru Thirimanne (22) were the only Sri Lankan batsmen who displayed some resistance against the menacing England seamers.

Anderson bagged his 19th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, while Broad provided an able support by returning figures of 4-21.

Earlier, England relied heavily on wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales as the duo helped the hosts recover from a dangerous 83 for five to post a respectable total.

Sri Lanka are now trailing by 206 runs and will resume their second innings with Kaushal Silva and Dimuth Karunaratne at the crease. The match was abandoned due to bad light.
