India to review Most Favoured Nation status given to Pakistan

27 September, New Delhi

India has decided to review the Most Favoured Nation, MFN Status given unilaterally to Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a review meeting in this regard on Thursday.

Senior officials of the Ministry of External Affairs and Commerce Ministry will attend the meeting.

The decision comes on the heels of a meeting yesterday where the Prime Minister reviewed the Indus Waters Treaty.

India accorded Pakistan the MFN status in 1996 under WTO’s General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and expected it to reciprocate.

Though Pakistan had agreed to grant Indian the MFN status during a secretary-level agreement in 2012 but it has not kept its promise, missing several deadlines.
