09 March,New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the first indigenously developed and manufactured Rotavirus vaccine, Rotavac.
The vaccine will boost efforts to combat infant mortality due to diarrhoea. Launching the vaccine, Modi hoped that the development of the vaccine will inspire higher levels of research, development and manufacturing activities in the country.
Modi also highlighted the vaccine as a successful example of collaboration between India and the United States in the area of medical research, for the benefit of ordinary citizens.
Each year, diarrhoea caused by rotavirus causes 10 lakh hospitalizations and kills nearly 80 thousand children under the age of 5 years. It also pushes many Indian families below the poverty line and imposes significant economic burden on the country.
