02 December, Aurangabad
A Bengal tigress here at the Siddharth Garden and Zoo of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) gave birth to four cubs but one of them was stillborn. The tigress, Samrudhi, gave birth to the cubs on November 12 last but the news was deliberately kept a secret.
The AMC officials said that three cubs are healthy. In view of the previous experience, their birth was kept a secret and no one was allowed to reach there, except their caretaker.
The officials today confirmed that a pair (Samrudhi and Siddharth) gave birth to the cubs. The cubs’ gender will be known after ten days from now. the sources said. “We have not identified the sex of the newly born cubs as they are maintaining safe distance from the big cats and the cubs,” the sources said.
“Animals do not like human interference at such a stage and therefore we are not allowing anyone to go near the mother or the cubs. We are keeping the mother and the cubs away from the public view as that can increase chances of cubs getting infected, he said further.
Of three, two are yellow and one is off white, all are with their mother Samrudhi and after one-and-half month they will be brought for public darshan, sources said.
According to the latest statement by Environment Minister, the number of tigers has shot up to 2500 this year.
