Puducherry Law Makers Demand For Statehood

Puducherry legislators, cutting across party lines with the exception of Congress demanded statehood for the Union Territory.

Participating in the debate on the motion of thanks to Lieutenant Governor’s Address, ruling party MLA Bhalan said statehood alone can ensure the Union Territory’s development.

He lauded the Union Government for its decision to amend rules to include Chief Minister of Puducherry in NITI Ayog, despite Puducherry being a Union Territory.

The House saw noisy scenes as a ruling MLA alleged that a prime property adjacent to Raj Nivas, is being grabbed by land sharks with the help of fake documents. Later, protesting against the Chair for not giving a ruling for inquiry into the issue, Congress, AIADMK and DMK legislators walked out of the house.
