Tamil Nadu Ban Manual Scavenging

Tamil Nadu Government officially banned manual scavenging. A notification in this regard has been issued Sunday.

The notification released by municipal Administration and water supply Department said ban came into force with immeidate effect from March 15 .

Earlier the Gazatte notification issued by the government on March 5th stated that, “The governor of Tamil Nadu hereby notifies the 15th day of March, 2015 as the date from which no person, local authority or any agency shall, engage or employ, either directly or indirectly, any person for hazardous cleaning of a sewer or a septic tank”.

The notification has been issued under the prohibition of Employment as Manual scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.

According to data furnished by the state government to the ministry of social justice and Empowerment, there are 979 manual scavengers in urban areas of the State and about 80,000 insanitary latrines, where night soil is removed by manual scavengers.
