Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Second Unit To Start Generation From July

The second unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu will start generating power from July, according to its Site Director R S Sundar.

Sundar said that various tests are being done according to norms, to achieve criticality. The hot run in the second unit of Kudankulam nuclear power plant is going on smoothly now.

Atomic Energy Regulatory Board will be giving the clearance for opening the vessel of the nuclear unit. Later as per strict AERB guidance and norms, nuclear fuel loading will be done in the reactor. Once criticality is achieved in the second unit nuclear reactor power generation will be started by July.

The first unit of Kudankulam nuclear power plant achieved criticality in July last year. After various parameters were checked by AERB experts the approval for commercial generation was given by Nuclear Power Corporation last December.

Till now 5100 million units of electricity has been generated from the first unit of Kudankulam Nuclear power plant. Of the 1000 Mega Watt electricity generated in the first unit, 562 mega watt is being to Tamil Nadu, and the rest to Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry.
