TRAI Recommends Single Number ‘112’ For All emergency Phone Calls Across India

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India – TRAI Tuesday proposed that a single number ‘112’ can be used for all emergency phone calls across the country including for police, fire and ambulance.

TRAI said in its recommendations that similar to the ‘911’ an all-in-one emergency service in the US, government can integrate all existing emergency numbers such as 100, 101, 102 and 108 into the proposed ‘112’ helpline number.

The regulator suggested existing emergency numbers can be retained as secondary numbers. TRAI also recommended setting up of Public Safety Answering Points to handle people’s call in distress.
