PM Modi interacts with athletes going to Tokyo Olympics; Lauds their confidence, positivity, discipline and dedication

New Delhi, July 13

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said, the things that are common in all the athletes going to Tokyo Olympics are their boldness, confidence, positivity, discipline, dedication and competitiveness. He said, this is also the reflection of New India. He was interacting with Tokyo Olympics contingent of India today. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Anurag Thakur and Law Minister Kiren Rijiju were also present on the occasion.

Mr Modi said, boldness and calmness are the qualities that Indian players possess and the new India is also based on boldness, calmness and unity. He added that 135 crore Indians are supporting players participating in Tokyo Olympics. People from across the nation are cheering their favourite players through NamoApp.

The Prime Minister said, Khelo India and Fit India showcase the true spirit of sports of New India. He pointed out that there are many sports where India is participating for the first time. He said, a committee was formed for Olympics a few years back. All players are getting trained with the best-quality equipment and international exposure.

Talking to archer Deepika Kumari,  Mr Modi termed her journey as special. He said, the nation is talking about her after her feat in Paris and she is world number one now. Deepika Kumari said, she started her journey with a bamboo bow and then moved to a modern bow gradually.

Boxer Mary Kom shared how her children support her in pursuing boxing. She encourages her children to stay brave and fight these COVID times bravely. Archer Pravin Jadhav said that he and his family struggled financially, but he did not let it deter him from his goal of becoming a world-class sportsman.

Badminton player P. V. Sindhu shared how a diet plays a crucial role in the life of an athlete and how she has to control her craving for ice cream. Sprinter Dutee Chand shared that she always wanted to win medals for her country, so despite challenges, she overcame them all to fulfil her dreams.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur thanked the officials including coaching staff and support staff for their hard work with the athletes. He said, Sports Ministry has not left any stone unturned to support athletes.
