Campaigning for Assembly Elections in Assam, Keralam and Puducherry ends; Polling on 9th of April

The campaigning for Assembly elections in Assam, Keralam and Puducherry has ended this evening after days of hectic political activity. Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies of Assam, 140 in Keralam and 30 seats in Puducherry will be held in a single phase on the 9th of April.

Authorities have tightened security and administrative measures to ensure free, fair, and peaceful polling.

In the final hours today, top leaders from various political parties made concerted efforts to connect with voters and strengthen their support base across these regions. Our Assam Correspondent reports, senior BJP leader Amit Shah led the campaign for the party in the three districts of the Barak valley.

Campaigning for the Puducherry Legislative Assembly Elections 2026 came to a close this evening, marking the end of electioneering across the Union Territory.

Kerala Assembly election campaigning ended today, marking the start of the silence period.

Ahead of polling, security arrangements have been tightened across Keralam. A total of 76,000 personnel have been deployed as part of this. In addition, one hundred and sixty teams of central forces have been stationed in various parts of the state to strengthen security measures. Meanwhile, a total of two thousand and forty polling booths have been identified as sensitive. Enhanced security arrangements will be put in place in these locations. A 48-hour liquor ban has also come into force across the state as part of the pre-poll measures.

After days of hectic political activity, including roadshows, public meetings and outreach programmes, campaigning concluded with leaders from various parties making their final appeals to voters. On the last day of open campaigning, several national and state-level leaders participated in campaign events across different parts of Puducherry.

As the mandatory silence period has come into force, in line with the directions of the Election Commission of India, District Election Officers of Puducherry and Karaikal have issued prohibitory orders from 6 PM this evening till 6 AM on Friday. Under these orders, unlawful assemblies, public meetings, processions and the use of loudspeakers have been banned. Non-voters or persons who entered the constituencies for campaign purposes have also been directed to leave, and publication or broadcast of any election-related content, including opinion polls and predictions, has been prohibited.

Polling will be held on Thursday across all 30 constituencies of the Union Territory at 1,099 polling stations. A total of 294 candidates are contesting this time from these constituencies. The Election Commission has put in place extensive security arrangements, including webcasting facilities at the polling booths. This will allow live monitoring of booths from a central control room while ensuring the secrecy of voters. A paid holiday has also been declared in the union territory to enable all eligible voters to exercise their franchise.
