Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and K V Viswanathan sworn in as Supreme Court judges
New Delhi, May 19
Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior advocate K V Viswanathan were sworn in as judges of the Supreme Court today. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud.
With this, the working strength of Supreme Court has reached its sanctioned judge strength of 34. It was working with 32 judges following the retirement of Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and M R Shah. The Supreme Court Collegium headed by the Chief Justice had recommended their names on 16th May after which the government approved it and notified their appointments yesterday.
KV Viswanathan is the tenth lawyer who has directly been appointed from the Bar to the Supreme Court bench. He completed the five-year integrated law degree from Coimbatore Law College, Bharathiar University and enrolled with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in 1988.
Meanwhile, Justice Mishra was serving as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court until his appointment to the Supreme Court. While recommending the name of Justice Mishra, the collegium noted that there is no representation of the High Court of Chhattisgarh in the present composition of the Supreme Court.
