PM chairs meeting to review Indus Waters Treaty

26 September, New Delhi

While India is weighing all options to isolate Pakistan following the Uri terror attack that killed 18 soldiers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday chaired a meeting on Indus Waters Treaty, which concluded with Pakistan in 1960.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Principal Secretary to the PM Nripendra Misra and Water Resources Secretary Shashi Shekhar.

India had said that for any such treaty to work, mutual trust and cooperation was important and it could not be a one sided-affair.

The Indus Waters Treaty is a water-distribution treaty between India and Pakistan, brokered by the World Bank (then the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development).

The treaty was signed in Karachi on September 19, 1960 by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Ayub Khan.
