08 June, Kolkata
The CBI probing the Narada sting operation scam has summoned Trinamool Congress MLA and Kolkata Municipal Corporation(KMC) Deputy Mayor Iqbal Ahmed to appear in its office on June 10 following a cout order.
This was the first notice of summon of the CBI to one of the 13 accused persons, after the central investigating agency filed FIR against 12 TMC leaders, including MPs, ministers and MLAs and an IPS officer for their alleged involvement in the scam. CBI sources at its Salt Lake office said the summon notice was given to the TMC for his appearance at CBI’s Nizam Palace office in the city on Saturday.
Iqbal Ahmed, who represents the Khanakul assembly segment, is also the Deputy Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Sources close to Iqbal Ahmed said the MLA had been ailing for long andnot attending the office of the municipality.
The CBI notice comes two days after Calcutta High Court on Tuesday asked the investigating agency what it was doing as it had not questioned Narada CEO Mathew Samuel or recorded his statement in the sting operation case. The HC observation came while it was hearing TMC MP Afrin Ali (known as Aparupa Poddar earlier) in the Narada sting case
Justice Joymalya Bagchi questioned the CBI, “Have you collected the certificate of the originality of the video from Samuel?
In case of electronic evidences it is must. Go and record the statements of prime witness and please make progress.”
“You (CBI) should also examine/probe whether the public servants hasdemanded the money or Samuel himself offered the same. For both the cases, situation may be different.”
