Kerala Govt. To Appeal Against HC’s Ruling –Being Maoist Is Not A Crime

The Kerala government will move an appeal against the High Court ruling that being a Maoist is not a crime.

The State Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has said, the government would move an appeal against the court verdict. He said it would be difficult to enforce the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act under these circumstances.

The Kerala Government has asked state Home Secretary Nalini Netto to submit a report after examining the verdict delivered by Kerala High Court. It fears that the verdict will affect the ongoing anti-Maoist operations in the state.

On Friday, a single bench of the Kerala High Court had ruled that being a Maoist is not a crime and police cannot detain a person merely because he is a Maoist.
