Democrats secure control of both houses of Congress in US Midterm elections
Washington, November 04
In the US, the Democratic Party has secured control of both chambers of the Congress in a sweeping victory in the 2026 midterm elections, dealing a major political setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party. In a stunning reversal, Democrats captured the House of Representatives and the Senate, ending Republican control of Congress and setting the stage for a new era of political confrontation in Washington.
As per the latest results, Democrats have secured at least 228 seats in the 435-member House of Representatives, comfortably crossing the 218-seat majority mark. In the Senate, they have won 54 seats against 44 for Republicans, with two seats yet to be decided.
The Democratic gains include major victories in traditionally Republican strongholds such as Texas, South Carolina, Kansas, Iowa and Ohio, signalling a significant shift in the political landscape.
The results signal a strong voter backlash against the Trump administration’s economic and foreign policies. Economic concerns, particularly inflation and rising fuel prices, emerged as major factors behind the Republican setback. The prolonged US-Israeli war with Iran, which has disrupted global energy supplies and pushed up fuel costs, also became a major campaign issue.
With control of both chambers, Democrats will have greater powers to scrutinise the Trump administration, launch congressional investigations and block key legislative proposals and presidential nominations. However, President Trump will remain in office, retaining his executive powers and the ability to veto legislation.
