Protests intensify in Jharkhand after clashes between students and police during Assembly march

Tension prevailed in Ranchi today during the students’ Vidhan Sabha gherao protest over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations in Jharkhand. Police used water cannons, tear gas and lathi charge to stop the protesters. Meanwhile, former JPSC Chairman L. Khiangte has also been arrested.

According to the police, a section of protesters attempted to break through the barricades and pelted stones at police personnel, following which force was used. Ranchi City SP Paras Rana and SP Rural Gaurav Goswami appealed to the students to maintain peace and said that the police had exercised restraint. The protesters are demanding an independent CBI probe into the JSSC-CGL examination and comprehensive reforms in the JPSC-JSSC examination system.

Meanwhile, the Jharkhand CID arrested former JPSC Chairman L. Khiangte in connection with the alleged recruitment examination irregularities. Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth criticised the police action and reiterated the demand for CBI and ED probes.

Meanwhile, BJP MP from Hazaribagh Manish Jaiswal met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and raised the issue of alleged irregularities in the JPSC-JSSC examinations and the students’ agitation, seeking a CBI probe. Following the police action and the arrest of the former JPSC Chairman, the issue has intensified, while the students remain firm on continuing their agitation until their key demands are addressed.
