Target Fixed To Construct 50 Lakh Houses Per Year : Union Minister Birender Singh

Union Rural development minister Birender Singh Friday said, a target has been fixed to construct 50 lakh houses per year.

Speaking at a national workshop in New Delhi, Singh said, earlier, only 15 lakh to 20 lakh houses used to be constructed under Indira Awas Yojana. The minister said three crore houses are to be built under Indira Awas Yojana in the next six to seven years.

He said, it was felt that the houses constructed earlier cost 70,000 rupees each and were expected to last for about 10 years, but now the government would ensure that the houses last for at least 40 years. Saying houses worth living is a necessity, Singh gave stress on sanitation and cleanliness in rural areas.
