Heavy Rain Disrupts Normal Life In Mumbai, Train , Air Services Badly Hit

Heavy downpour in last 24 hours has brought life in Mumbai to a total halt. Railways, Road and Airline services have been badly disrupted.

The lifeline of Mumbai, all the three railway services, Central, Western and Harbour have been rendered non-functional due to flooding of tracks. Several long distance trains too have been cancelled while trains approaching Mumbai have been delayed. Mumbai Metro service too has been disrupted. The Railways have said the services will resume only after the rains subside.

Railway stations too are packed with commuters waiting for services to resume. The low lying areas in city and suburbs are flooded bringing road traffic to a standstill. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has put 120 suction pumps into services to remove accumulated water.

The public transport service in Mumbai, BEST, has deployed extra fleet of buses for commuters’ convenience. The water-logged roads also led to many people missing their scheduled flights. Meanwhile, Mumbai International Airport has announced delay for 8 international flights and 18 domestic flights.

All the Municipal Corporation schools have declared a holiday today while Administration urged private schools too to remain closed. The Controller of Examinations, Mumbai University informed that all theory and practical exams scheduled for today stand postponed.

In last 24 hours, Mumbai city experienced 123 mm rainfall, eastern suburbs 152 mm and western suburbs 156 mm. The Indian Meteorological Department said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over the next 48 hours. A high tide of 4.47 metres is expected at 2.30 pm and hence the Corporation has urged Mumbaikars not to venture out unless extremely necessary.

Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court has declared a holiday today due to heavy rains that are lashing the city and its suburbs. All courts in Mumbai including the High Court will remain shut for the day due to heavy rains.
