Nirmala Inaugurats Model salt Farm In Pondy

Union Minister of state for Industries and Commerce Nirmala Seetharaman inaugurated a model salt farm here this evening.

Speaking on the occasion,she said forty thousand tons of salt is being produced in 2600 acres in Tuthukkudi,Vedaranyam and Marakkanam in Tamilnadu.Of this 1300 acres belonged to the central government,she said adding that inorder to enhance the salt producing capacity this model far was set up in ten acres.

Field training is being accorded to the workers for the production of quality salt here and all steps would be taken to ensure that quality salt is being produced in marakkanam.Salt farms were available in Marakkanam before the year 1805,she said.

The minister said Tamilnadu stood second in salt production in the country next to Gujarat .At the global level India stood third after China and America in salt production,she said adding that the model salt farm here was set up at a cost of Rs.35.5 lakhs with the scientific technology from the salt research centre, at Bhavnagar,Gujarat.

She said a four lane road is to be laid on the east coast from Kolkotta to kanyakumar via,Chennai and wanter transport facility through Villippuram district would be made available .Once, the schemes were imnplimented,Villippuram district would develop much in the industrial sector.

Speaking on the occasion union minister of state for road transport Pon Radhakrishnan said India stood third in the production of salt in the world and it is the desire of the prime minister Narendra Modi that Tamilnadu shold become the first state in salt production.This function is a prelude to this,he said .

Tamil Nadu minister P Mohan, speaking on the occasion, said after Thuthukkudi and Vedaranyam, Marakkan was known for salt production. It is proposed to set up an industry to produce three lakhs metric tons of salt at a cost of Rs.5.63 crore.
