Sonowal Takes Over As BJP Assam Chief

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Wednesday took charge as the Assam BJP president, pledging to take the party to electoral success in next years state Assembly polls.
After successfully leading BJP to emerge victorious in the state in last Lok Sabha elections, Sonowal has once again been chosen by the partys central leadership to lead it in 2016 Assembly polls.
Taking over charge as the new state chief, Sonowal said, It is an important responsibility placed on my shoulders to ensure that the BJP comes out victorious in Assembly elections. My goal will be to bring everyone together and march ahead as a united force, he said, adding that divisive forces were in play in the state and his aim was to defeat those.
The Lok Sabha member from Lakhimpur constituency said, there are divisions being created among us along the lines of our tribes and communities. We have to unite to defeat these forces and BJP will lead the way.
Sonowal took over charge from Siddhartha Bhattacharya, who has been appointed as the party spokesperson for North Eastern region.
Bhattacharya had served as the party state president for a little more than a year, taking over from Sonowal last year when the latter was included in the Union Ministry.
The second term of Sonowal as BJP state president, since he joined the party in 2011.
