Doctors Succeeds In Transplanting Heart Of Brain Dead Student

A team of Doctors at Narayana Health Cityhave successfully transplanted a live, heart of a brain dead teen-agedstudent to a 32 year-old patient Sunday.

The parents of a 17-year-old Kiran Kumar, a college student, whohad met with an accident on December two while returning after a picnic with his friends to Nandi Hills in the outskirts of the city,was declared brain dead, agreed to donate the heart.

Swift action was initiated by the team at Narayana Health City toidentify the recipient in coordination with Zonal Coordination Committee for Organ Transplants in Karnataka (ZCCK) and informed the Bangalore Traffic Police to arrange a green corridor. The heart was retrieved by Julius Punnen, Cardiothoracic Transplant Surgeon and taken to the hospital in Hosur Road near Electronic City covering a distance of 38 kms in just 23 minutes.

The heart transplant surgery took around 90 minutes, performed bya team of doctors led by Ravi Shetty, Cardiothoracic TransplantSurgeon, Dr Julius Punnen, Bagirath Raghuram, Senior Transplant Cardiologist, Srikanth K V,Cardiologist, and Muralidhar Kanchi, Cardiac Anesthetist fromNarayana Health City.

The recipient was a 35-year-old patient hailing from Delhi. Hewas suffering from Restrictive Cardiomyopathy and waiting for adonor heart for the past five months. The cross match was conducted by TTK Blood Bank, which enabled the transplant to conclude in time.
