18 February, Chennai
Police Thursday arrested the controversial folk-singer Kovan on charges of sedition for leading a protest demonstration against the arrest and attack of JNU Students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar.
Police said Kovan and more than 50 persons belonging to several student’s organisations gathered at Shastri Bhavan in the city and shouted slogans against the BJP-led government at Cthe entre demanding immediate release of Kanhaiya.
When they tried to block the road, police immediately detained the protesters and took them into custody.
Kovan was arrested last year on sedition charge for allegedly referring to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in a song in his campaign against the state government’s liquor policy. Later, he was released on bail.
