Bengal govt to set up astro-turf hockey stadium for BHA

The West Bengal government will set up an astro-turf hockey stadium with a capacity of 8000 to 10000 sitting capacity at the Salt Lake Stadum complex, according to Bengal Hockey Association (BHA).

BHA top official Gurbux Singh and secretary Swapan Banerjee in a joint conference said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has acceded the BHA request to bear all the cost to set up an astro-turf stadium at the Salt Lake stadium.

The hockey stadium will come up outside the football stadium ( Vibekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan complex, the venue of 2017 World Cup football for under 17 in 2017), said Singh.

The BHA is the oldest hockey association in India and organises annual Beighton Cup, also the oldest trophy in the country, does not have an astro turf, which first introduced in hockey in 1976.
