ICC World Cup : Sri Lanka beat England by 9 Wkt

Sri Lanka  registered  a huge win against  England  in a Pool A encounter in the ICC Cricket World Cup  at Wellington.

Chasing a target of 310, Sri Lanka  exhibited  splendid batting  . After opener Tilakratne Dilshan got out  with 44 when the team  score was 100  opener Lahiru Thirumanne  and wicket keeper Kumar Sangakara  smashed England bowling attack to register a big win  with 16 balls to go .

Kumar  Sangakara who was adjudged   the Player of the Match  scored a smashing 117 run off 86 balls. Lahiru Thirumanne scored 139 run off 143 balls.

England’s Moeen Alli  has bagged the lone wicket of   Dilshan.

This was Sri Lanka’s third win from four matches. Sri Lank is in second position in Pool A   while New Zealand  topped  the  point table .

Earlier, after winning the toss England decided to bat first. Riding on Joe Root’s 121 England posted 309 for 6 in stipulated 50 overs. This match is important for England, if they have to stay in the hunt for quarter finals.

In the other encounter today, Pakistan  is  taking on Zimbabawe at Brisbane. This Pool B encounter is a must win match for Pakistan as it decides future course of the team towards knock out stage.

Pakistan  batting first scored  177/6 in 42.1 overs  as per the last report.
